NBC shows its second ever Toronto Maple Leafs game in the Centennial Classic as the Leafs host the Detroit Red Wings. Rogers Sportsnet will handle the coverage in Canada.
Before we get to 2017, we still have the final Saturday night of 2016. With the Leafs off on Saturday, the focus switches to the Montréal Canadiens in Pittsburgh in the first half of the CBC doubleheader.
City TV gets a rare Saturday night off from the NHL.
The NHL inexplicably put 2 Canadian-based games late on New Year's Eve to make more complex the holiday traffic jam. CBC Saskatchewan-East (except for Iqaluit) will not get a late game because of New Year's Eve celebrations. The local markets (Vancouver, Edmonton) and the territories will show the Vancouver Canucks in Edmonton. CBRT/Calgary is the only CBC station to carry the desert team in Calgary.
CFYK/Yellowknife is the CBC source for the territories from the Yukon to Nunavut. So though Nunavut is in the Eastern Time Zone, the station carries programming from 2 hours behind. So the CBC New Year's celebrations will be on well after midnight in Iqaluit and throughout the territory.
Rogers Sportsnet will carry the Canucks-Oilers while Rogers Sportsnet One simulcasts the Calgary game. CBUT/Vancouver will carry After Hours along with Rogers Sportsnet One. Hope our Canadian viewers are still carrying multiple CBC feeds.
Rogers Sportsnet also runs an early Saturday game with the New York Islanders in Winnipeg. The Hometown Hockey festival from Petawawa, ON has a battle of capitals as the Ottawa Senators are in Washington. The channel also carries a Thursday night game with the Edmonton Oilers in Boston.
Besides Calgary on Saturday, Rogers Sportsnet One piggybacks SNW and SNP as the Winnipeg Jets are in southern Florida Wednesday night. Rogers Sportsnet 360 babysits SNE and SNO as the Canadiens travel to Dallas.

Bob Cole has had quite a bit of time off in December, but he will get one more Hockey Night in Canada telecast in 2016. Cole and Garry Galley will call the Habs in Pittsburgh. Given that Rogers has to cover 4 games on Saturday and 2 on Sunday, Cole was definitely needed. Too bad the U.S. audience won't see that game on the NHL Network.
The NHL Network loves using the home feed in the matinee rebroadcasts. However, when Edmonton and Toronto visited the desert last week, Canadian feeds were used. Canadian teams draw well in the desert thanks to the snowbirds. So maybe the true "home team" was based in Canada.
Chris Cuthbert worked with Pierre McGuire Wednesday night on NBCSN. The two would have worked wonders in Toronto on Sunday.
