This Hour Has 22 Minutes launches its new season tomorrow night on CBC but without the services of writer and performer Shaun Majumder.
As we learned late last month, Majumder submitted a letter to his bosses at DHX Media as to how to improve the show. The management took the letter of offering constructive help as a reason to get rid of Majumder.
"I just felt like we were leaving a lot of funny on the table," he said.
Majumder was with the show from 2003-2010 and 2011-2018. He starred in Detroit 1-8-7 in that missing year. That show was cancelled after a year and Majumder returned to This Hour Has 22 Minutes.
The remaining cast members are original cast member Cathy Jones (1993–); Mark Critch (2003–); Susan Kent (2012–); Trent McClellan (2017–); and Meredith MacNeill (2017–). MacNeill is also part of Baroness von Sketch Show.
Rick Mercer left This Hour Has 22 Minutes in 2001 and started his signature show Rick Mercer Report in 2003. (He was also doing Made in Canada from 1998-2003.) We aren't comparing Majumder with Mercer but Majumder having his own comedy show on CBC would be a marvelous idea. The idea of sharper humour would have worked well on This Hour Has 22 Minutes and can also work on a Majumder untitled project.
We've enjoyed Majumder's contributions and look forward to more from him in the Canadian TV future.
