According to autoage.org, the news is even worse. I reported in April that the number of Howard Johnson's across the country was declining from 9 to 7. Well, the number rests at 5 (6 if you count the soon-to-be-torn-down Times Square locale).
The lone Midwestern location in Bay City, Michigan closed unexpectedly. The Millington, Maryland location is also gone. So the viable 5 are in Bangor, ME; Waterbury, CT; Lake Placid, NY; Lake George, NY; and Asbury Park, NJ. According to the Web site, even some of those locations are dubious at best. The Times Square location at the northwest corner of 46th Street and Broadway in Manhattan is expected to close sometime this year.
The unveiling of W. Mark Felt as Deep Throat reminds me of my Watergate/HoJo's memory. There was a HoJo's hotel, orange roof and all, across the street from the Watergate hotel in Washington, DC. In 1996, I ate at the Bob's Big Boy within the HoJo's structure. Likely, it was an old HoJo's restaurant. Not the same as a real HoJo's, but a memory is a memory.
