Between school lunches and the world of food stamps, we have a lousy government policy toward feeding those who have trouble feeding themselves. And this isn't counting government subsidies toward high-fructose corn syrup and partially hydrogenated soybean oil that dominate ingredient lists for cheap food.
"About six million Americans receiving food stamps report they have no other income, according to an analysis of state data ... About one in 50 Americans now lives in a household with a reported income that consists of nothing but a food-stamp card."
While the horrible economy makes these numbers significantly worse, these numbers weren't great even before this tsunami of economic bad news.
When the economy does better, we, as a society, need to come up with a better way. Not a perfect solution where magically "everyone gets food." But something that is improved would be a fine start.
Eating well is important not just for those who know what to do; eating well is important for all of us.
