There is a clear conflict of interest in the government pushing cheese, especially when the government is trying to get people to eat healthier.
This is more about the high-fat versions found on American pizzas.
Dairy Management's work with Domino's to push the high-fat cheese is beyond the conflict of interest realm. The U.S. government should consider getting out of the cheese consultant business, and do the long-needed splitting of duties of the USDA.
An organization that promotes and regulates food isn't effective in doing either one well.
The article notes that "one slice (of the pizza) contains as much as two-thirds of a day’s maximum recommended amount of saturated fat."
Dairy Management has certainly been "successful" — the example of the Taco Bell steak quesadilla — "The item used an average of eight times more cheese than other items on their menu."
The food structure is bad enough in this country without the government making it worse.
Success shouldn't be measured on the negative effect of stomachs and health of its people. As someone commented to The New York Times, this isn't news. Sad but true.
USDA-inspected sounds good. USDA-financed and USDA-supported sounds like a bad conflict of interest, a tin ear to the needs of the people who pay their salaries.
