Not sure how limited the potential for Lunch Line is, but this documentary on the school lunch system tells about the history on how the government came to run the school lunch system, how it started, and why the USDA runs the program and not the Dept. of Education.
The film juxtaposes the history of the school lunch program with a group from Chicago's Tilden Academy who wins a contest by making a healthy lunch for $1 per meal. At Tilden Academy, 99.8% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunches.
Jamie Oliver should watch Lunch Line so he has some idea as to how and why the school lunch program is screwed up. Oliver knows that it is, but based on the first season of Food Revolution, he seems confused as to why.
You can't blame Oliver completely; the film only scratches the surface as to why, even if the explanation doesn't always make sense. Oliver isn't from here.
Jamie Oliver's Los Angeles experience makes its debut on ABC tonight — 8 pm Eastern/Pacific. There will be battles with Oliver trying to get inside the walls of the LA school system. Oliver should realize that the better battle is over food, not walls.
BalanceofFood.com film coverage
However the second season goes, we plead with Oliver, Ryan Seacrest Productions, and ABC — limit the commercials to commercial breaks. No commercials during the show, no product placement, no patronizing ad input.
If Oliver doesn't listen to my insistent advice, they are on notice that BalanceofFood.com will be paying attention, and we will call out all that is responsible. Updates every Wednesday through the run of the second season.
