"made with natural high-quality proteins, whole grains, and farm-fresh fruits and vegetables"
The best food ad that we saw in breaking down the ads on "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution" was an ad for pet food. This was better than most humans were eating.
So when we heard that Dorothy Hunter was going to eat pet food for 30 days, she could have done a lot worse.
"I actually believe our pets are eating better than us," Hunter said on her YouTube channel.
Hunter owns a pet store in Richland, Washington so she is in a good position to know. She discovered the taste of pet food because she was hungry. She is in the middle of her quest, scheduled to end July 19.
We don't feed cows, pigs, and chicken the best stuff, and that doesn't even count the hormones and antibiotics. And we eat those animals. Feeding your cat and dog well is pretty easy to do, and we don't eat cats and dogs.
As humans, we would be better to ourselves if we fed our cows, pigs, and chickens as well as we feed our cats and dogs. Animals, human or otherwise, don't need high-fructose corn syrup. Animals don't have a need for fillers and colors in their food. When you are color-blind, you don't care what color the food is in your bowl.
Pet lovers can easily treat their pets better than themselves. The hope is getting to a point where we treat ourselves as well as we treat our pets.
Cats and dogs aren't targeted in food ads. They don't meow or bark to buy a particular food item. The humans are targeted, appealing to their desires to give the best to them.
Human food ads aren't geared toward giving us the best. Deception, false positives, asterisks: this is what we get for human food.
As humans, we can communicate better about what we like or need. We don't really do that with food. For too many people, cost is king. We don't speak up to say we want something better.
The idea of Domino's coming up with a healthier product and refusing to sell that to us inspires laughter (through Stephen Colbert) rather than outrage.
Eating pet food is healthier because pet food is designed with nutrition in mind. The food Hunter eats in the YouTube video (above) cuts straight to what dogs need. Too often, humans eat food because they want, not need.
Humans are not pets or farm animals; we do require want and need. We can improve our food supply by treating farm animals with better dignity. In the grand scheme, animals we eat are more important than animals we don't. We should treat them with similar dignity, but this is a food chain.
Cows, pigs, and chickens should be fed well to ensure they give us the maximum nutrition (want) and best taste (need). Then humans would eat those animals and be in the best possible shape. The humans are in the best frame of mind to buy food that is best suited for their domestic pets. All animals win, regardless of species.
But we need to speak up. Humans can articulate how they feel about the food that are given. Speak up. Meow. Bark. Moo. Cluck, Oink. Whatever it takes to get the message across: feed us better.
