Canada and hockey seem synonymous with each other. The perception is that all Canadians skate and can play hockey.
Well, that isn't true, of course. There are other sports where Canadians excel. And like me, some Canadians can't skate well, much less play hockey.
Hockey fans know when you score 3 times in a game, it's a hat trick. A natural hat trick is when you score 3 goals in a row for your team.
Well, even though Joey Votto is Canadian and doesn't know how to skate, he does know what it's like to score 3 times. Votto hit 3 home runs in yesterday's 9-0 Cincinnati Reds win over the Chicago Cubs.
It wasn't a natural event since he did walk after hitting his first home run. Votto hit his home runs to different parts of the ballpark: right field, center field, and left field. But it was still rather impressive.
Votto is the third Canadian player to hit 3 home runs in a game. Larry Walker, one of the best Canadian-born players, has done it 3 times and Justin Morneau once. Votto is the first rookie to ever hit three homers in a game for the Reds.
Yes, hockey will always be significant. But as two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash can tell you, Canadians excel at other sports.
