While not the star of the show, Justin Morneau from New Westminster, B.C. (a Vancouver suburb) was the winner of the 2008 home run derby Monday night at Yankee Stadium. Morneau, of the Minnesota Twins, defeated Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers, 5-3 in the final round.
Hamilton wowed the crowd with 28 first-round home runs, more than Morneau had on the whole night. The players' total were reset at 0 for the final round, which allowed Morneau to beat Hamilton.
Morneau had 8 in the first round and 9 in the second round. He is the first Canadian-born player to win the home run derby.
Morneau is one of three Canadians in the All-Star Game, a record for athletes north of the border. Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Ryan Dempster (Gibsons, B.C.) and Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Russell Martin (Chelsea, Quebec).
