Could baseball return to La Belle Province courtesy of … the Toronto Blue Jays?
Almost a year ago, I wrote that the Blue Jays should play Philadelphia in Montréal during the G20 summit last June. The Blue Jays nixed the idea before Bud Selig, who will never be Montréal's friend, had the opportunity to nix the idea himself.
But Toronto Blue Jays president Paul Beeston says he is open to playing in Olympic Stadium in Montréal, home of the Expos from 1977-2004.
The Blue Jays games have been broadcast in Montréal in English for some time, but Toronto's MLB team is getting some limited exposure en Francaise. CKAC-AM, the one-time home of Les Expos, broadcast eight weekend games last year and will air 15 this year, though the 15 games will wrap up by July.
As Selig will tell you himself, getting a team back in a city that has lost a team requires exposure to baseball in that city. After the Milwaukee Braves left County Stadium after the 1965 season, Selig convinced the Chicago White Sox to play 9 "home" games in 1968 and 11 "home" games in 1969. One year later, Selig bought the fledgling Seattle Pilots and moved them to Milwaukee.
If only Selig had that same sense of decency for the many baseball fans of Montréal. Kudos to Paul Beeston to being open to starting down that road.
So cute! I already like you on FB and also get your posts on Google Reader. :)
