Along the idea of "didn't know Canadians protested about hockey," we now get "why are they protesting Will and Kate in Quebec?"
To understand the protesters and the boos, you should understand that English Canada and French Canada have differences, especially about their native countries. Quebec moving from French to British control after the French and Indian War also has led to the reaction from some Quebeckers.
Prince William read some of his speech in French, and promised that his French would get better. He may not know that even in speaking French, the dialect differences between Quebec and France are as profound as, say, English Canada from England.
Will and Kate shouldn't take the criticism personally; this is about Will's relatives, some from many centuries back. And some protesters are English speakers who think Canada should sever ties to Britain, and that Britain gets rid of the monarchy.
The royal couple are in Prince Edward Island before they go to Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories and then Calgary for the Calgary Stampede.
While you alluded to it, there is a sizeable segemnt composed of the new generation of Cdns who think the monarchy isn't relevant; it's the traditional media like CBC, the older WASPish generation and celebrity focused media/people who pay attention to the royals.

Thanks for weighing in on this. Has to be a little weird to have ties to England, especially from an American perspective.
We very much appreciate getting that perspective, since the media coverage is so syrupy.
