It is unfortunate to also hear of Chicago's 2012 murder rate and gang problems. Particularly with President Obama himself being from that city.
I think Canadian cities suffer from high int'l expectations. Some people just assume that we have "no serious crime", soft drugs are welcome everywhere, and that we are outwardly friendly. Then they arrive.

I agree about the high expectations about Canadian cities. Toronto had a recent shooting at the Eaton Centre. The difference was that they caught a suspect right away. The 8 in Chicago are still at large.

Major Canadian cities have less crime than their American counterparts, but you still have to be aware.
