Don't you hate in movies when people go from one part of the city to another part in a ridiculous fashion that if you're from there, the route doesn't make sense?
In Take This Waltz, the characters live in a neighborhood and travel to specific destinations, all in a very reasonable fashion. Sarah Polley, who wrote and directed the film, lives in Toronto, and shows us some gems in that neighborhood.
We know that the main characters live near Queen and Dufferin Streets (B) since Michelle Williams tells the cab driver that the destination is near that intersection. Queen and Dufferin is around the long-time Dufferin Jog on the west side of Toronto.
The neighborhood is just north of Exhibition Place, site of BMO Field, the old Exhibition Stadium, and the Honda Indy Car race.
Daniel (Luke Kirby) takes Lou (Seth Rogen) and Margot (Williams) in a rickshaw to the Royal Theatre (A). The distance is 2.7 km, very reasonable.
Daniel and Margot also end up at Kensington Market for coffee; the distance is a little bit further but overall 3-4 km away. Again, this is a very reasonable distance.
One other note: Daniel and Margot share some poutine in a park. Couldn't tell you which park but it looked pretty cool.
For me, a film with realistic parameters about where it is set makes for a better film, even if the characters are fictional. Seeing people in real settings and real situations makes for a more realistic film where you can lose yourself in Canada's largest city.
