Can I put my volcano in your trunk?
If you were watching any of the Rogers Sportsnet local feeds during the NHL Center Ice free preview, you couldn't help but see promos for the new show on City called Seed.
They didn't run the promos during commercial breaks; the promos ran in action breaks during the telecast.
While no one is calling out the similarity between the TV show and the Starbuck film, the comparisons are obvious. A ne'er do well sperm donor ends up in the people's lives from which the sperm has made its mark. Starbuck. Seed.
The line at the top is what our protagonist says to a woman. She initially thinks the line is sexual, but when the camera gives us a wider shot, we see the volcano over his left shoulder.
Starbuck was a comedy of sorts; we'll see if Seed can get funnier lines than that.
Vince Vaughn to star in U.S. remake of Quebec film Starbuck
This fall's Canadian film crop: will they come to the United States?
The Modern Family concept is also borrowed for this program. A lesbian couple have a young boy through his sperm. An uptight couple have a teenage daughter because of his efforts. A woman who wants a child without a man also used his output. Somehow, they all make one, er, family.
The U.S. might be ready for a remake of Starbuck in theatres, but might not be quite set for a TV comedy involving sperm donors. At least not on broadcast TV.
City simsubs the rest of the CBS Monday night comedy lineup, so Seed will go in the hole that CBS hasn't been able to fill since the cancellation of Partners. Seed airs at 8:30 pm Eastern.

Speaking of that Monday night lineup, this week's How I Met Your Mother delves into a lost episode of a behind the music show that features Robin, the Canadian in the cast (played by Canadian Cobie Smulders).
In a promo that aired during the Super Bowl, we saw real-life Canadians Paul Shaffer and Jason Priestly weigh on the fictional music career of Robin Sparkles.
Canada through the eyes of How I Met Your Mother
The program has had 3 other episodes that weighed in on Robin's Canadian past. The most prominent of those episodes, will be rerun this Friday night. FX is running Duel Citizenship, the episode where Barney and Robin end up in Canada at a Tim Hortons, Friday at 7 pm Eastern.
