When the "Today" show profiled poutine in Vancouver during the 2010 Winter Olympics, most Canadians probably snickered at the idea of poutine in Vancouver.
In the 2010 report that aired on NBC, Belgian Fries was featured in that report. Does it still have the "best poutine in BC"?
We tried three true Vancouver institutions to see how well they stacked up against each other and how well they might fare if placed in Montréal.
Surprisingly, finding poutine with Montréal smoked meat was quite prevalent, so that unexpectedly entered the equation. Dunn's smoked meat, well known in Montréal, has a Vancouver location. While we didn't get there in this trip, the Montréal smoked meat was well-respected in British Columbia's largest city.
We also got a surprise as Smoke's now has a location in Vancouver. Haven't had Smoke's since Toronto in 2010, so that was a nice surprise. Smoke's has a sense of humor about the Montréal smoked meat, including a pickle spear and mustard with a Montréal smoked meat poutine.
As for the poutine, any of the four bowls of poutine would have shined in the States, but how well did they stack up by Canadian standards? And which one took the prize for Vancouver's best poutine.
