Congrats to @EllenPage for coming out. Being who you truly are is the best thing in the world. We love you.
Ellen Page came out to the world on Valentine's Day.
"I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission," she said. "I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered."
The quote at the top is my tweet in reaction to the news. Page is someone we heartily respect and not just because she is, as it says on her Twitter page, "a tiny Canadian."
Page is a very good actress, a true humanitarian, and someone who deserves to be who she really is and not hide behind some unneeded Hollywood perception.

I remember back to 2007 when I was in Toronto for TIFF. I had been reading about this young Canadian actress that had 3 films in the festival: The Tracey Fragments, Juno, and The Stone Angel.
The whole world certainly knows the second film on that list, but I was more intrigued by the first film. Despite Page's success with Juno, tracking down The Tracey Fragments was really difficult. And when I did finally find the film, the search was worthwhile.
I still haven't seen The Stone Angel.
I just recently saw To Rome With Love with fellow Canadian actress Alison Pill. Both did a really fine job in the Woody Allen film.
But when I think about Ellen Page, I think about her cool interview with Jon Stewart, her efforts to showcase her hometown of Lunenberg, Nova Scotia, her commitment to improving the world and treating each other better, like she was doing at the Time to THRIVE, a conference from the Human Rights Campaign to promote issues of the gay community.
Yes, Ellen Page is a famous actress. But in our minds, she is a cool Canadian role model. And Friday's announcement doesn't change a thing.
