The Toronto International Film Festival announced its Canadian lineup, including the return of a long-time favorite.
Denys Arcand returns to TIFF with "An Eye for Beauty" — his first film since "Days of Darkness" in 2007. The new film is a romantic drama about a married Quebecois architect who has a love affair with a young Toronto woman.
Xavier Dolan's new film "Mommy" will play at TIFF. Speaking of Cannes, "Tu Dors Nicole" — the third feature from Quebec's Stéphane Lafleur — gained a bit of buzz from that festival. The film is a story of a recent university grad during a long hot summer in her small hometown.
Dolan is also starring as an actor along with Bruce Greenwood and Catherine Keener in "The Elephant Song" from Charles Binamé. "Bang Bang Baby" is a science-fiction musical from Jeffrey St. Jules starring Jane Levy, known for her role in TV's "Suburgatory."
"Heartbeat" is about a Halifax twentysomething who finds salvation by returning to her musical roots. "Preggoland" is about an underachieving thirtysomething who lies about being pregnant.
Atom Egoyan will have a film at TIFF, but it will be a new print of his 1989 film "Speaking Parts" and not his latest film, "The Captive" — which really didn't do well at Cannes.
TIFF will also check out the latest from David Cronenberg ("Maps to the Stars"), Philippe Falardeau ("The Good Lie"), and Jean-Marc Vallee ("Wild"). Iranian-Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari's story is told in "Rosewater" directed by The Daily Show's Jon Stewart.
Kevin Smith's "Tusk" has Canadian elements in the plot.
