The sudden death of Chris Hyndman, half of the popular Steven and Chris show on the CBC and syndicated in 17 countries, is still reverberating as a shock. The TV host was found in an alleyway near his home Monday night. He was 49.
Hyndman grew up in Paradise, Newfoundland, not too far from St. John's.
The CBC pulled the show from the schedule and understandably, we don't know what will happen to the show. If the show isn't retooled, the CBC will have yet another gigantic hole in its schedule.
What has been surprising has been the outpouring of emotion to Hyndman's death. Steven and Chris was a very simple show that clearly made a significant impact as a successful Canadian show that easily exported beyond the Canadian borders.
Hyndman and his onscreen/offscreen partner Steven Sabados broke down barriers by being openly gay and welcomed as TV hosts. They formed an amazing partnership that showed up well on the show.
In many circles, the show and the couple were virtually unknown. Judging by the reaction to Hyndman's death, he clearly made a huge impact on the world. Passing away so young makes that even more tragic.
