The Canadian film Room garnered 3 Golden Globe nominations. Emma Donoghue got a nomination for Best Screenplay for adapting her book Room about a woman and her child trapped in a garden shed. Brie Larson is nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama and the film surprisingly got a nomination for Best Motion Picture, Drama.
Jacob Tremblay deserved a nod for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. Tremblay gives an amazing performance, all the more so when you consider that he didn't know the darker circles that surround the story in the film. Sylvester Stallone got a nod in that category this year for Creed. Ouch.
Tremblay did receive a SAG nomination for a supporting actor, Larson also got a nomination for best actress for Room. Rachel McAdams did get a best supporting actress nomination for her role as Sacha Pfeiffer in Spotlight.
For Best Picture, Room is up against Carol; Mad Max: Fury Road; The Revenant; and Spotlight. Larson is up against Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara (Carol); Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn), and Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl). Brooklyn is a Canadian co-production.
For Best Screenplay, Donoghue is up against Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer (Spotlight); Charles Randolph and Adam McKay (The Big Short); Aaron Sorkin (Steve Jobs); and Quentin Tarantino (The Hateful Eight).

Remember didn't have enough buzz to get Christopher Plummer a nod, though the film might not qualify for this year's awards.

Tatiana Maslany did not get a nomination for Season 3 of Orphan Black. Maslany did get nominated in 2014 for Season 2. Though Season 3 partially shifted away from Maslany, she deserved a nod. I love Eva Green, who was nominated for Penny Dreadful, but Maslany is a much better actress. Can't speak for Caitriona Balfe, but Outlander is even more obscure than Orphan Black, a reason often given as an excuse as to why the show and its star couldn't get nominated.
Nominees in that category that most people will know are Viola Davis (How to Get Away With Murder); Taraji P. Henson (Empire); and Robin Wright (House of Cards).
We were hoping the Emmy nomination would help push Maslany into the spotlight.
Tatiana Maslany (finally) gets Emmy nod for Orphan Black
The foreign language film nominees have no relation to Canada. We love Felix and Meira but the film isn't going to score on the international awards stage.
Here are the foreign language Golden Globe nominees. I loved Mustang, though it is a heartbreaking story.
- The Brand New Testament (Belgium/France/Luxembourg)
- The Club (Chile)
- The Fencer (Finland/Germany/Estonia)
- Mustang (France)
- Son of Saul (Hungary)
No Canadian film has won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film though 2 films did win for Best Foreign Film, the category before the transition to Best Foreign Language Film.
Lies My Father Told Me won the Golden Globe in 1975. Canada was a co-producer for Una giornata particolare (A Special Day) that won the 1977 Golden Globe.
