Hi Americans! Donald Trump may become the President of your country! If that happens, and you decide to get the hell out of there, might I suggest moving to Cape Breton Island!
The threat to move to Canada depending on who gets elected president in the United States is not a new trend, but Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia is tugging on that sleeve to make a broader point.
Our population is shrinking. A slow economy, in combination with out-migration has us on an unsustainable path. The truth is we welcome all, no matter the ideology. We have a beautiful island, a friendly people, a rich culture and a bright future. Join us here on Cape Breton Island!
This isn't just a drive to get you to come visit the eastern most part of Nova Scotia. They want you to live there.
Despite all the jokes about moving to Canada, doing so is not easy. The Web site does give you a link in the FAQ if you really want to come to Canada.
Moving to Nova Scotia is significantly easier than to Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec. Those 3 provinces have waiting times for Canadian health care, not Nova Scotia. As the ad campaign notes, Cape Breton has "the most affordable housing market in North America!"
If you think consumer costs are high in Canada outside the Maritimes, they are even higher in the Maritimes. Getting goods to Cape Breton Island costs money.
The federal GST is 5% and the provincial sales tax is 10% so people pay 15% sales tax in Nova Scotia. That is somewhat comparable to the largest U.S. cities, but if you are moving from a state with a smaller sales tax, the money adds up quickly.

The easiest way to get to live anywhere in Canada is to find a job. Unfortunately, the Maritimes traditionally has higher unemployment rates than the rest of Canada. The oil jobs in Newfoundland and Labrador as well as Alberta have dried up, forcing more people to go back home to the Maritimes to find work. The Web site does have a link to potential jobs in Sydney.
At the same time, if you are earning U.S. dollars, those dollars go a lot further in Canada with a current exchange rate around 73¢.
"Our Summers are delightful with highs in the 80 degree range. Winters here are very similar to the North East USA"
I have been to Nova Scotia twice in the summer. While I have not been to Cape Breton Island, the Nova Scotia natives tell me it's incredible. The summers are delightful; if you hate really hot temperatures, Nova Scotia is pleasant with marvelous ocean breezes along the coast.
As for the winters, well, they make you hearty.
Don't wait until Donald Trump is elected president to find somewhere else to live! Start now, that way, on election day, you just hop on a bus to start your new life in Cape Breton, where women can get abortions, Muslim people can roam freely, and the only 'walls' are holding up the roofs of our extremely affordable houses.
The abortion line is pretty funny, given that you can get abortions in Nova Scotia. As we've learned, getting an abortion in nearby Prince Edward Island is literally impossible. Sydney is the largest city on Cape Breton Island and that would be your best bet.
This is not a joke! See for yourself, you belong here with us on Cape Breton Island, where health care is free, you know your neighbours and they look out for you, and nobody has a hand gun!
We can break down rational reasons to move or not to move to Cape Breton Island. You do get intangibles. Nova Scotia is a very friendly place. The pace is slower. You can get a front yard and a back yard. Canadian education, especially on the primary and secondary level, is rather good. And you don't have to worry about handguns.
In Cape Breton, we value diversity! Here, you can hear a number of other languages, like French and Mi'kmaq, even Gaelic! But everybody also speaks English, just like you!
I have the blood of every major country that influences the Maritimes, including English, Welsh, Irish, Scottish, and French. The Maritimes folk music is a beautiful sound to my ears.
Of course, if you just want to visit Cape Breton Island, the site can take you to the tourism site found here.
Some of the attractions are Cabot Trail, seafood, Celtic colours, the Lumière art festival in Sydney in September.
I have certainly sung the praises of visiting the Maritimes. As for living there, 3 months out of the year would be joy, and a lot of Netflix and Chill for the colder months. Regardless of how the 2016 U.S. presidential election, you should do your own research and find out whether this area of Canada is right for you.
