Alan Thicke always had a sense of humour. Successful talk show in Canada. Struggling, short-lived talk show in the United States. Then sitcom success in the United States.
You could think of Thicke in all of those points and you wouldn't even come close to what he accomplished.
Thicke reportedly suffered a heart attack and died last night at the age of 69.
Game show host. TV theme composer. Singer and songwriter. Film actor. Sitcom writer.
Of all those memories, and there are so many, my thoughts go to bringing his Canadianness to How I Met Your Mother on CBS. Thicke only appeared in 5 episodes but his performances as himself were memorable.
We found out that Thicke hosted Space Teens with Robin Sparkles and Jessica Glitter where the young team solved math problems — with beavers. He also appears as Robin's father in the Sandcastles in the Sand video. Thicke punched out Barney in P.S. I Love You when Barney tried to find out who Robin had been stalking.
In The Rough Patch, Thicke is one of several options arranged by Lily to break up Barney and Robin. Thicke appears in The Rehearsal Dinner singing Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm by the Canadian band Crash Test Dummies at Barney's Canadian-themed rehearsal dinner.

Thicke appeared in the Canadian film Childstar from Don McKellar. He starred in the Canadian film It's Not My Fault and I Don't Care Anyway which Thicke was promoting last Thursday on Q. Click here to listen to the Q radio segment with Tom Power.
Thicke had been presented with the Canadian Icon Award earlier this month at the Whistler Film Festival. "By this point you're either an icon or a punch line," he laughs in the Q interview. "I really felt very privileged to be honoured this way."
