274 Ledas. That number seems to include the originals Sarah and Helena. We got to meet Camilla Torres from Cartagena, Colombia.
The scene where Delphine, Cosima, and Scott are in the basement investigating Leda leads is as close as we may ever get to a spinoff I had envisioned where the three of them solve crimes with science. I mentioned this to Josh Vokey, the actor who plays Scott, in a random meeting on the streets of Toronto in 2016. He liked my idea.
Of course, that has to wait until Cosima and Delphine travel around the world to inoculate the Ledas.
A huge thank you to Graeme Manson and John Fawcett for giving up the half-hour to show what freedom means to each of the sestras of Orphan Black. That was a very valuable gift.
Sarah Manning had fought a lot of battles as herself and as Beth Childs. Manning struggled to mourn the loss of her mother in Episode 508 (nice cameo by Mrs. S in the finale). Her sestras came to the rescue in a beautiful sit-down in Alison's backyard in the finale.
"The truth is that I think I really understood the ‘Kill Your Gays’ trope, perhaps more than a few people as we were driving toward the dramatic end of [Season 3], and I absolutely refused to have that character die. I was OK with a cliffhanger that we could claw our way back from, but I was 100 per cent against ever killing [Delphine]. I knew we were going to take heat even cliffhanging it, but as long as we could bring her back, I was willing to take the heat.
"But bringing her back was very difficult. I mean it was pretty obvious what was going on when you realize that Évelyne Brochu was the lead in another series. I mean, I don’t know what all the hoopla was about. [Laughs.] I mean, come, look, she’s got another series, what do you think happened here? And the fact that she was carrying another series made it extremely difficult, but I was 100 per cent determined to bring her back, even though I knew that we would get her back very, very lightly in the next season. I made the case hard to our people, to the producers to keep the thread alive, and I made the pitch hard to Évelyne and said, ‘This is not the end. We want to bring you back. It’s the right thing for the show. It’s the right thing for these characters. You started the show, you’ve gotta end the show.’ And Évelyne really took it to heart, and we made it work."
— Graeme Manson on tv-eh.com over the weekend on the story of how Delphine survived.
"I know this will be upsetting to many fans but the story in our minds has always been a tragic love story. Listen, I didn't want to say one way or the other. For us, I believe this is a horrible thing that had to happen. And I know that it's hard and I know that it's emotional and I know there are going to be a lot of people out there going “WHY?!?” But trust me, this was a necessary move to make. And it's necessary in Cosima's story and it's necessary going forward in subsequent seasons — in season 4 and season 5."
— John Fawcett to Entertainment Weekly after Delphine was shot at the end of Season 3.
Évelyne Brochu was in X Company on CBC and filming in Hungary. Fawcett and Manson might have been playing good cop, bad cop. I knew Delphine was somehow alive. Their growth in their relationship in Season 5 was beautiful to watch. The scene where Cosima dresses in a tux with Delphine in a Victorian dress is one #CloneClub will remember fondly.
Examining the legacy of Orphan Black
We hope to see a legacy, an impact of Orphan Black on the future of Canadian television, domestic and abroad. But we are also grateful for intelligent writing, amazing acting, and a sense of joy in making a beautiful TV program.
CloneClub can look forward to the 2018 Emmys and 2018 Canadian Screen Awards for more recognition for the show. Tatiana Maslany and Kathryn Alexandre absolutely dazzled us with the multiple clone scenes such as the backyard setup in the series finale. May their work and the work of the entire cast and crew continue to get praise and honour. And maybe a feature film at some point.
