Bon Cop Bad Cop was a brilliant film that brought together English and French to solve crime. There were tons of hockey references, language battles, flirting, making fun of Gary Bettman.
The success of the film and the talk of a sequel lead to wonder whether a sequel would do justice to the original or whether developing these characters would be worth the effort.
Bon Cop Bad Cop 2 takes away most of the humour, all of the flirting, most of the language issues, and all of the mocking of Bettman. What you are left with is a film that is slightly above average.
Patrick Huard, who wrote both films, is back at David Bouchard. Colm Feore returns as Martin Ward. David is undercover when Martin and his crew bust up a car-theft ring. They end up on the same side as the case gets more intense, given what is at stake.
The original film was about solving a crime but that felt like a background story next to cool characters doing interesting things. The sequel gives us a crime drama.
The sequel is very straight forward that the flirting fun is gone. Martin's sister marries an 86-year-old. David's wife only sees Martin waving from the garage.

Mariana Mazza plays MC, who helps out the cops with all kinds of technology. The cops get amazing access to what the bad guys are doing. The moves feel like a James Bond parody of sorts.
The jokes about the U.S. cops felt a bit off. Cops near the Quebec border would hear French and think the language is Swedish?
There are many things to like about the sequel. David Bouchard and Martin Ward are a more mature version of these characters. The focus is on their legacies via their children. There is a funny joke that involves Carey Price. The auto-theft ring turns into a terrorist attempt that the cops are able to fight from Montréal even as the plot takes us into the United States. There are a lot more car racing in the sequel than in the original.
Without giving anything away, they made sure there would be no talk of a Bon Cop Bad Cop 3.
If you thought the original film wasn’t heartwarming, you’ll love Bon Cop Bad Cop 2. If you loved the original film, watching the sequel will give you closure with the characters but don’t expect the energy or humour level of Bon Cop Bad Cop.
Bon Cop Bad Cop 2 has been released in theatres in Canada and on Netflix in the United States.
