The Shape of Water, shot in Toronto and Hamilton and where most of the cast and crew are Canadian, won 4 Oscars last night at the 90th Academy Awards. The film from Guillermo del Toro won Best Picture with producer J. Miles Dale; del Toro for Best Director; Paul Austerberry, Jeff Melvin, and Shane Vieau for Production Design; and French composer Alexandre Desplat for Best Original Score.
The film received 13 nominations, 1 short of the all-time record. Other Canadians who were nominated for the film are sound editors Nathan Robitaille and Nelson Ferreira; sound mixers Christian Cooke, Brad Zoern, and Glen Gauthier; costume designer Luis M. Sequeira; and film editor Sidney Wolinsky.
"Thanks to all the Canadian crew who are partying right now at the Palais Royale in Toronto — this is for you," said Austerberry in accepting his Oscar.
"Other than Guillermo and the cinematographer and some of the actors, every single person on this film was Canadian and really kind of from Toronto — so it absolutely is I think unprecedented, frankly, in terms of the type of recognition," Dale said in an interview last week.
The Elgin Theatre on Yonge Street in Toronto is one of many local icons featured in the film.
Sally Hawkins, who was nominated for Best Actress from The Shape of Water, is also nominated for best actress for Maudie in next Sunday's Canadian Screen Awards.
How Canadians did at the 2018 Golden Globes
Christopher Plummer get 2018 Oscars nomination for All the Money in the World
Looking at how Canadians have done at the Oscars
Christopher Plummer found out early in the evening that he didn't win Best Supporting Actor for All The Money In The World, losing out to Sam Rockwell for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Plummer has received 3 Academy Awards nominations, all for Best Supporting Actor. He was nominated for The Last Station (2009); won for Beginners (2011); and nominated for All The Money In The World (2017).
Plummer was cited in a few jokes from host Jimmy Kimmel about Plummer's advanced age. The jokes ranged from Plummer being the youngest nominee at the first Oscars to whether Plummer knew the actual Alexander Hamilton.
The Breadwinner lost out for Best Animated Feature to Coco.
Blade Runner 2049, directed by Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, won two Academy Awards for cinematography and visual effects. Canadian Dennis Gassner was nominated for best production design. Montréal and Villeneuve got a shoutout during the acceptance of the visual effects Oscar.
Lots of Canadians up for #Oscars again this year. Congratulations, good luck tonight and thank you for bringing your magic to the big screen.

Hochelaga, terre des âmes gets Canada nod for Best Foreign Language Film Oscar
CanadianCrossing.com film coverage
A Fantastic Woman from Chile won the Best Foreign Language Film. Canada has had a few nominations, though none lately, and a singular win, The Barbarian Invasions. The new Xavier Dolan film will be foreign, but will not be eligible for that Oscar category because the film is in English.
