The 2018 Toronto International Film Festival has splendid potential for some great Canadian films. We have established directors with solid track records with promising releases. As always, we also love that surprise film that was better than expected.
The new Xavier Dolan film The Death and Life of John F. Donovan will debut Monday at the Winter Garden Theatre. For those of you who can't get into that screening, the new Thom Fitzgerald film Splinters looks promising.
I've only missed a single full-length Denys Arcand film (Joyeux Calvaire from 1996) in his modern era of releases. The new Arcand film The Fall Of The American Empire features Alexandre Landry, whom you might have seen in Gabrielle.
Patricia Rozema, who was featured on CBC's The Filmmakers for Into the Forest, has a new film also featuring young women in Mouthpiece. The Great Darkened Days from Maxime Giroux (Félix And Meira) features Sarah Gadon and French actor Roman Duris.
My 3 possible surprise films:
- Firecrackers from Jasmin Mozaffari with Michaela Kurimsky and Karina Evans as best friends in rural Ontario.
- Through Black Spruce could be that surprise film with an indigenous mystery plot line under the direction of Don McKellar.
- Les salopes ou le sucre naturel de la peau (The Naturally Wanton Pleasure Of Skin) has great potential from Quebec director Renée Beaulieu.
The Special Presentations for the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival are the new releases from Rozema and McKellar along with Giant Little Ones from Keith Behrman and The Hummingbird Project from Kim Nguyen.
