The 2018-2019 NHL season starts off with the traditional opening night doubleheader. Rogers Sportsnet will have the classic Montréal-Toronto matchup from the newly named Scotiabank Arena. Vancouver will actually play on opening night hosting the Calgary Flames.
The NHL Center Ice free preview should start today. Traditionally the preview has lasted about 3 weeks. Last year, we got 7 days.

Your guide to watching Canadian NHL teams in 2018-2019
In past seasons, we have offered up links to professional analysis stories from CBC, TSN, and Rogers Sportsnet on the fate of the 7 Canadian NHL teams. The TSN previews disappeared last year. So here are previews of the teams via CBC Sports and Rogers Sportsnet.
Toronto Maple Leafs | CBC | Rogers Sportsnet |
Montréal Canadiens | CBC | Rogers Sportsnet |
Ottawa Senators | CBC | Rogers Sportsnet |
Winnipeg Jets | CBC | Rogers Sportsnet |
Calgary Flames | CBC | Rogers Sportsnet |
Edmonton Oilers | CBC | Rogers Sportsnet |
Vancouver Canucks | CBC | Rogers Sportsnet |
Max Domi returns from his preseason suspension to make his official Montréal Canadiens debut tonight. Domi sat out 5 preseason games over a sucker punch against Florida. Domi has a lot to deal with to make up for the loss of Alex Galchenyuk. A strong regular season start will help, especially if Domi is more focused.
CanadianCrossing.com NHL coverage
57% of the Canadian-based NHL teams have a captain: Winnipeg and the 2 Alberta teams. That number is lower than the percentage of overall (about 70%) NHL teams with a captain. Vancouver's captain just retired while Montréal and Ottawa traded their captains within the last month. Toronto has been the rebel, going without a captain for over 2½ years. The percentage went up on Monday when the Montréal Canadiens selected Shea Weber as the new captain. Weber will be out until at least December rehabbing a knee injury.
New book reveals how the CBC lost Hockey Night in Canada — CBC Radio One The Current
Given how much we have written about CBC and the Rogers deal in 2014 to take over Hockey Night in Canada, we will highly intrigued about a book from The Globe and Mail sportswriter David Shoalts titled Hockey Fight in Canada: The Big Media Face Off Over the NHL. Shoalts talked on The Current on CBC Radio One about how the CBC was an underdog going into the negotiations but made several crucial mistakes along the way.
This may be an intriguing book even if we know there is an unhappy ending. I haven't seen the book so I can't vouch for it. If I were to get a copy, I would be glad to do a book review for CanadianCrossing.com.
