2018 didn't move much from the list of Canadian destinations that I still want to see. Don't cry for me, Canada. I'll get there when I can.
2019 offers up a federal election so if seeing Justin Trudeau campaigning or the other party leaders campaigning is a tourist attraction, the election is October 21 with about 35 days of campaigning leading up to that. Stephen Harper stretched out the 2015 campaign to ridiculous lengths but don't count on Trudeau doing the same.
Being in Canada where cannabis is legal but nowhere to be found
Opening Day for legal recreational marijuana in Canada
Marijuana tourists to Ontario will have to wait awhile
Our guide to legal marijuana in Canada
2019 also marks the year you can make solid plans for marijuana tourism, should that interest you. We love Ontario but until Doug Ford and Ford Nation figure out what they are doing, go somewhere else. The stores are supposed to open in April but don't plan accordingly. If you live near Ontario and can go on a whim, wait until summer or longer.
There are other locations that may be more desirable. Check our coverage and do a few Internet searches to make sure you are on the ideal path. This might be a good year to go to Alberta, given its beauty and relatively relaxed rules.
Anthony Bourdain takes CNN's Parts Unknown to the mysterious land of Newfoundland
The script was flipped where Anthony Bourdain explored a place where I had been. His take on Newfoundland was wondrous and worth watching. You can argue that flying to London is cheaper than going to Newfoundland, but a Newfoundland trip will be very special. And a friendly place for marijuana tourism as well. Just be careful of the moose in the road.
Greyhound Canada to abandon Western Canadian provinces
Western Canada is worth exploring. You can find plenty of cars to rent but don't give up on the idea of bus service. Companies have jumped in where Greyhound no longer goes. The service might be better and cheaper.
Toronto stories from a resilient city
Toronto sports cornucopia is a small portion of what makes Toronto a worthy destination
Too often we suggest Toronto as a good starting point to explore Canada for the first time. Toronto really is a wonderful, first-class city to explore. Getting out of downtown is a great start. The people of Toronto are part of the travel adventure. If the people in the largest city are that friendly, imagine what the rest of Canada has to offer.
A trip to Winnipeg and Churchill if The Price Is Right
After seeing Winnipeg on TV, you should go see for yourself
You can take advantage of flying to a specific site and then exploring from there by car. Winnipeg offers many attractions but you can use a flight to Winnipeg to go elsewhere in Manitoba or swing over to Thunder Bay, Ontario or check out Saskatchewan. You can even take Via Rail from Winnipeg to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan's largest city.
