The NHL is a non-factor on Saturday nights for the CBC. For once, this isn't Gary Bettman's fault.

May 23

Tatiana Maslany is back with a recent Canadian film from writer-director Kim Nguyen (War Witch | Rebelle). Two Lovers and a Bear takes place in Apex, Nunavut, Canada. Gordon Pinsent is featured as the voice of Bear. Maslany is the primary reason to see this film. This is an above-average film though Picture Day is better.
Remember was directed (not written) by Atom Egoyan. Christopher Plummer and Martin Landau star as an elderly Holocaust survivor with dementia goes out to hunt down a Nazi war criminal.
The early entries on May 16 and May 23 are family-oriented films. The Journey Home is about a teenager who works to reunite a lost polar bear cub with its mother. Milton's Secret is about a kid who is bullied. The cast includes Mia Kirshner and Donald Sutherland.
Dr. Cabbie was scheduled earlier this spring but the schedule changed. Beeba Boys is from Deepa Mehta about the Vancouver arms and drug trade.

While we would love to see a pair of films aimed at adults, having a family film in the early slot does make sense. We are less familiar with family-oriented Canadian films.
