We have declared that Ginger Snaps is our most favourite horror film of all time, an impressive feat given how many great horror films they are, especially ones from Canada.
The idea of a Ginger Snaps TV show is provocative yet unsettling.
Killing Eve producer Sid Gentle Films is in on the project. So is Copperheart Entertainment, producers of the Ginger Snaps trilogy. The executive producer will be John Fawcett, co-creator and director of the original film and co-creator and executive producer of Orphan Black. Then again, films are usually about "from the producer of [insert name of film]" so that only goes so far.
Anna Ssemuyaba (Guerilla) will write the TV series. Know nothing about her. Karen Walton co-wrote the original film with Fawcett.
I love #GingerSnaps film. As a TV series, excited but wary. Make sure this is great. https://t.co/QE4Vx4kj17 #cdnfilm #cdntv

Katharine Isabelle and Emily Perkins starred in the trilogy of the original film Ginger Snaps as well as Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed and Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning. The final 2 films were okay but didn't hold up to the original film.
We have 2 major concerns:
- The TV series won't live up to the original film and weaken the franchise.
- The TV series won't be as Canadian as the original film trilogy.
The former concern is more important than the latter concern but both are related. The quality of the films is linked to being Canadian.

The role models that are Ginger and Brigitte do deserve a modern outlet. The original Ginger Snaps film is 20 years old. We love Ginger Snaps because the story is intelligent with a feminist bent. That story needs to be fresh in a similar way to revitalizing the Anne of Green Gables story with Anne with an E.

We don't know about an outlet for the new show. BBC America and CTV Sci-Fi Channel (formerly known as Space) would be the logical entry points to the United States and Canada.
Turns out there was a Ginger Snaps TV show in 2017 with Lauren Lapkus and Canadian Cree Summer. Can't copyright TV and movie titles.
In the meantime, enjoy some or all of the Ginger Snaps trilogy, Cannibal Girls, and some of the many great Canadian horror films on Halloween 2020. Happy Halloween.
