If you had access to the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, you could have seen the Canadian films with the most nominations at the 2022 Canadian Screen Awards.
Scarborough and Night Raiders led the way with 11 nominations. All My Puny Sorrows has 8 nominations but shut out in the major categories. Wildhood and Les oiseaux ivres had 6 nominations each.
Drunken Birds | Les oiseaux ivres, the Canadian film nominated for Best International Feature Film, is up for Best Motion Picture. Night Raiders, Scarborough, and Wildhood are from the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. The surprise in the category is a film from the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival in Night of the Kings | La nuit des rois.
Female directors have an easier time getting nominated for a Canadian Screen Award than an Academy Award. Danis Goulet is up for her film Night Raiders while Shasha Nakhai co-directed Scarborough.
Unlike previous years, there are no obvious American actors up for a major award. Michelle Pfeiffer won the Canadian Screen Award last year for Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for French Exit.
Julia Sarah Stone gets a well-deserved nomination for Come True. Good to see Mark O'Brien get an acting nomination for his film The Righteous. O'Brien wrote and directed his feature film debut.
Wish I had seen more of these performances. I have seen Night Raiders among the actors nominations.
Ste. Anne, winner of the Best Canadian Feature Film, didn't get any Canadian Screen Award nominations. The film could be eligible for next year's awards.
