Even during the major part of the pandemic, Reel Canada's efforts to shine light on Canadian film did not go dark since people can watch Canadian film from the comfort of a couch while their pets sleep.
National Canadian Film Day is that day (today) for everyone to embrace a Canadian film, hopefully one you haven't seen. Maybe you want to see a Canadian film that you love and want to see yet again. No judgments!!!
The Reel Canada Web site offers wonderful options, especially if you are in Canada. You can engage with fellow human beings at events. If you are feeling shy or hesitant, don't worry. Plenty of options for streaming and television.
The site also has a section for spotlight films with intriguing Indigenous titles.
If money is an issue, CBC Gem has some Canadian film titles. You have to deal with ads for free but that is an option. The National Film Board has plenty of free films, especially if you are on Canadian soil. There are also Canadian films on YouTube; our recent The Rowdyman film review offers that option.
Scarborough dominates 2022 Canadian Screen Awards for film honours
Telefilm Canada brings back more Canadian films for rent
The Marijuana Conspiracy is this week's 99¢ rental through the Apple TV app. The film is on Hulu in the United States.
That's right: Americans can find Canadian films on streaming services well-known and little known. Not easy to find them; sometimes they are in plain sight.
The rest of the Telefilm Canada list can inspire you to watch those titles.
The Canadian Screen Awards inspired us to want to see Scarborough. Night Raiders is easier to find. Learned a lot about Islands. Wildhood is opening in some Canadian theatres today.
Canadian film review: Canadian Strain
National Canadian Film Day 2022 happens to be on 4/20. If you want to celebrate both, you will love Canadian Strain. We've seen Jess Salgueiro in a lot of great bit parts. Wonderful to see her as the lead in a film.
You can also see The Marijuana Conspiracy on 4/20.
Heralded Canadian filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée passes away at the age of 58
We can't recommend just one Canadian film on National Canadian Film Day. If you were a Jean-Marc Vallée fan and you only knew his American work, C.R.A.Z.Y. is a film to see. Seeing Cafe de Flore will do in a pinch, but C.R.A.Z.Y. really showcases all of what Vallée was: music, plot, underdogs. A wonderful film ahead of its time.
We know finding the film, especially on the U.S. side, is shockingly difficult. A reminder that while Vallée did directing and editing south of the 49th parallel, he wrote both C.R.A.Z.Y. (co-wrote) and Cafe de Flore.
Canadian film review: One Week
Miss traveling around Canada as much as we do? One Week is a great Canadian travel film. Okay, you won't see Canada east of Toronto. Still, there is some amazing scenery.
Canadian films that might explain a bit about the world of residential schools
National Canadian Film Day can be a way to learn about the dark parts of Canadian history, such as residential schools. We have a few films that can start a few conversations.

Learning a lot from lists of top all-time Canadian films
You can get some inspiration from what others think are the best Canadian films. The TIFF list will get updated sometime this decade; the current list is rather impressive.

Now that anglophones are more accepting of subtitles, Quebec releases some beautiful films that show a different part of Canada. We haven't seen as many during the pandemic because finding them can be more difficult.
We're seeing more films in Indigenous languages as well.
We had a look back at the Best International Feature Film nominees for the Academy Awards: the ones we've seen and the ones we still want to see.
