There were a lot of strong Canadian film choices at the 2022 Windsor International Film Festival for the 2022 WIFF Prize in Canadian Film. The festival announced that Riceboy Sleeps directed by Anthony Shim is the winner of the 2022 WIFF Prize in Canadian Film.
The winner gets a $25,000 prize for winning the honour.
"This intimate yet sweeping film is poignant, authentic, and visually powerful," said the jury in a release. "Remarkable performances and assured direction bear witness to the complex story of how an immigrant mother and son navigate the profound challenges of displacement as they search for a sense of belonging."
This is Shim's second full-length film as writer and director: Daughter (2019) was his debut. Shim also has a considerable acting career.
Riceboy Sleeps also won the TIFF Platform Prize in September.
These are the other Canadian film nominees for the 2022 WIFF Prize in Canadian Film:
Brother (Clement Virgo)
Eternal Spring (Jason Loftus)
Falcon Lake (Charlotte Le Bon)
I Like Movies (Chandler Levack)
Norbourg (Maxime Giroux)
North of Normal (Carly Stone)
Something You Said Last Night (Luis De Filippis)
The Swearing Jar (Lindsay MacKay)
To Kill a Tiger (Nisha Pahuja)
Your humble narrator hustled to see as many of the Canadian film titles. Saw all but To Kill a Tiger. A difficult task since there were lots of wonderful choices.
Here are the people who served on the jury of industry experts; Magali Simard, director of industry and community relations at Cinespace Studios Toronto; Jason Gorber, film journalist and member of the Toronto Film Critics Association, OFCS, and the Critics Choice Association; Glenn Sumi, acting managing editor NOW Magazine; Sally Lee, executive director of the Canadian Independent Screen Fund (CISF); and Joanna Miles, marketing executive.
"Riceboy Sleeps is a sensitive, exquisitely judged film by a major talent in Anthony Shim,” said Vincent Georgie, executive director and chief programmer for WIFF, in a release. “Our congratulations to him, and a very special thanks to Jury President Magali Simard and her jury."
