Crossing from Detroit to Windsor was wonderfully boring when attending the 2023 Windsor International Film Festival. No frantic negotiations with Detroit cabbies, such as in 2022.
We have wonderful Canada travel stories that may seem long ago, yet traveling lately has been a struggle for your humble narrator. The reasons are difficult to explain. I want to travel in my heart and with my body back into Canada.
A trip back to Montréal. A first trip to Saskatoon. A chance to see relatively new CFL stadiums in Regina and Hamilton. The Icefield Parkway in Alberta. Cape Breton in Nova Scotia. Gander in Newfoundland. Churchill in Manitoba, though that might be a pipe dream. The interior of British Columbia, a world not Vancouver or Victoria.
I've been to Quebec City but would like to try areas of the city I didn't get to see. Stratford, Ontario as an adult: have been there as a kid. Explore the Acadian part of New Brunswick.
We've written these words a few times. Still our travel goals in 2024.
Experiencing marijuana tourism in Canada
Bought a lovely cookie in 2023 from the same place as 2022 in downtown Wjndsor. Paying in cash is an option in Canada. A very simple transaction. Not that you need to relax while in Canada: you can anywhere in Canada. Helpful if you are from the States in a state where recreational marijuana still is not legal.
High-speed rail brings people closer together, even in wide open spaces such as Alberta
Canadian travel infrastructure is a gigantic issue in traveling by bus, unless you are leaving from specific U.S. cities to specific Canadian destinations. Think Seattle to Vancouver. The idea of better train travel in western Canada is something where politicians of all stripes could unite. Increased tourism within Canada instead of dollars going to the United States, Mexico, and elsewhere. Let's encourage this.
There are buses but that is more of a Web search than in the days of Greyhound. VIA Rail doesn't run as often as it should and costs more than one should expect.
CFL in Halifax: 2023 Touchdown Atlantic observations
The CFL finally played a regular season game in Halifax after being in Moncton, New Brunswick several times as well as Wolfville, Nova Scotia in 2022. Halifax is a beautiful city, one that Canadians might discover if the CFL ever figures out how to get the Atlantic Schooners in motion.
The CFL Touchdown Pacific for 2024 will be in Victoria, also the home of Hockey Day in Canada later this month on January 20. Victoria may seem too quaint and filled with retirees. Victoria is a wonderful destination all its own. The city can also serve as a gateway to Nanaimo, Tofino, and Ucluelet on Vancouver Island.
The football game will be on the Saturday of Labour Day weekend, a wonderful time to be on Vancouver Island.
If you are traveling from the States to Victoria, flying into Seattle and then taking a boat to Victoria is a fun way to get to the capital of British Columbia. You wouldn't need a car to get around downtown Victoria, including the site of the game. A fun way to travel.

Mourning the loss of The Main in Montreal
I need to gain a few pounds and a trip to Montréal will help with that cause. You could watch the long lines getting into Schwartz's on Rue Saint-Laurent from inside The Main. Was the smoked meat better at The Main? Prime Minister Justin Trudeau seemed to think that was true. The prime minister represents the Papineau riding in Montréal in the House of Commons.
Would have been nice to compare the two in the next trip yet that will not happen. A lot of great places to eat in Montréal and elsewhere in Canada.
