BlackBerry is having a good week. Fresh off the win for the Rogers Best Canadian Film award, the Canadian film picked up 17 Canadian Screen Award nominations. This sets a new Canadian Screen Awards record for most nominations. Brother, from last year's awards, had 14 nominations and won 12 awards.
Matt Johnson is up for best director and Performance in a Supporting Role, Comedy. The film acting awards this year are separated into drama and comedy, giving recognition to more actors.
Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person | Vampire humaniste cherche suicidaire consentant has 12 nominations. The Ariane Louis-Seize film is up for Best Picture and Best First Feature Film Award.
Sara Montpetit and Steve Laplante are among the nominees for this film. Both Quebec actors were nominated last year (Falcon Lake and Viking, respectively).
Monia Chokri, who just won the César award for Best Foreign Film for The Nature of Love | Simple comme Sylvain, got an Original Screenplay nomination and an acting nomination for Magalie Lépine-Blondeau for lead role in a comedy.
Swan Song won the Rogers Best Canadian Documentary and isn't in the documentary category for the Canadian Screen Awards. Someone Lives Here is in the category; the film was a finalist for the other award.
We have more nominations than last year: 12 screenplay nominations instead of 8 from 2023. Sophie Dupuis (Solo) is up for best director, one of 2 women along with Ariane Louis-Seize, though Dupuis didn't make the screenplay cut.
Richelieu wins the unofficial award for a Canadian film nominated for best picture for a Canadian Screen Award that I had to look up on the day of the nominations. Couldn't be as bad as Summer with Hope from last year. That film and Until Branches Bend had screenplay nominations from last year with terrible scripts.
Who's Yer Father? got a couple of acting nominations for Susan Kent and Chris Locke. Not a highbrow film but very enjoyable.
A couple of films we saw at the 2022 Windsor International Film Festival are in this year's nominations. Alexandra Weir got an Adapted Screenplay nomination for the amazing North of Normal. Something You Said Last Night is up for Best First Feature Film Award.
We saw Someone Lives Here and Twice Colonized, up for Best Feature Length Documentary, at the 2023 Windsor International Film Festival. Both were very good documentaries and highly informative.
