Canadian filmmakers don't take on sex as well as American filmmakers and definitely not French filmmakers. Jeremy Lalonde is generally not as afraid to explore sex on screen. Sex After Kids is more about relationships where sex is playing, or not playing, a factor.
We have multiple storylines playing out with an ensemble cast. Zoie Palmer is a talented Canadian actor stuck doing a terrible Australian accent as a single mother. She is pressured to explore casual sex, ironically by her brother (Paul Amos). Amanda Brugel and Peter Keleghan play a couple where he sees her more as a mother and a person of desire. Jay Brazeau and Mimi Kuzyk are featured in a relationship where they try to figure out where they are sexually after their adult daughter (Katie Boland) flies the coop.
The cast also features Mary Krohnert and Kate Hewlett as a lesbian couple; Kris Holden-Ried as a single father looking for love; and Shannon Beckner and Ennis Esmer as resuming sex after having a baby. Gordon Pinsent is the sex therapist, the kind you want to find in real life.
Talking about sex isn't always that exciting but Jeremy Lalonde delivers a quality script and fine direction. Flipping between stories can make you lose momentum if you like a particular story but the pacing is good between the stories.
If you've seen Amanda Brugel in smaller roles, such as Kim's Convenience, Sort Of, or The Handmaid's Tale, you will love her in this film.
The acting is good with the exception of Palmer's accent (not her fault). The content isn't too steamy; this is a Canadian film after all. This is a good relationship film, even if you don't have kids.
