If you are fortunate enough to be in Calgary for the Calgary Stampede, which starts on Friday, you should watch the Stampeders tonight northwest of downtown (take the Red Line CTrain to Banff Trail).
The brand new Stampede Bowl features the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as the opponent. The Calgary Stampede runs July 4-13.
Traditionally, the CFL doesn't schedule Calgary at home during the Stampede.
An early in the season preview of the Battle of Southern Ontario is on for Friday at BMO Field. Plenty of black and gold will be on hand in the stands near Lake Ontario. Both teams are on a 1-game winning streak, though Hamilton is in second place with one fewer loss.
Traditionally, the CFL plays the U.S. anthem on their holiday, unless the anger is deep enough to blow off the tradition. Most CFL players are American.
The BC Lions are on the road again for another Saturday night, this time in La Belle Province. Nathan Rourke (if healthy) vs. Davis Alexander (if healthy) is enough reason to catch the game at Molson Stadium.
Edmonton might be more eager to play Ottawa at home, seizing on the idea of not just winning a CFL game but doing so at Commonwealth Stadium on a Sunday night.
CTV covers the Saturday game. CBS Sports Network repeats last week's pattern with all the games but the Friday night game in the United States.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders, who don't want a break, will give their American players a chance to celebrate the holiday while everyone can have some extra Saskatoon berry pie.

FG blocked and Slywka takes it the length of the field for his second score of the night!

Even if we paid attention to the nuances of CFL rosters, we might not have known Derek Slywka before the game in Ottawa on Sunday night. A scoop and score that went 105 yards for a major. Then the recovered blocked field goal that Slywka ran 120 yards back for another Toronto touchdown.
The RedBlacks had problems in the red zone at the start: interception, scoop and score, and the returned missed field goal.
This now ensures that all 3 Ontario-based teams have a CFL win in 2025. Hamilton has the advantage with 1 fewer loss.
That’s Masoli in a nutshell. A lot of good efficient plays to get them into FG range, and then that. You simply can’t throw it there that late. You don’t recover from that play. It will be the game decider. @CFLonTSN https://t.co/oITy77wKEi

We know asking Dustin Nielson, who was in Regina, to say "What is happening" during the Tevaughn Campbell interception would have been too much. When we saw the interception, we asked "What is happening?" The BC Lions could have had a touchdown on that drive at the end of the first half but got called for offsides.
Campbell's 87-yard Pick 6 would normally be the play of the week, but Slywka (Toronto) had 2 longer returns.
Jeremiah Masoli threw a bad pass at a moment where points were virtually guaranteed. We love Masoli but he has struggled in place of Nathan Rourke.
As for the green team, A.J. Ouellette went over 100 yards for the first time with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Ouellette had 23 carries for 139 yards with a touchdown. The Roughriders still have Ka'Deem Carey in reserve and a perfect 4-0 record.
Jake Maier won in his first start with Saskatchewan, doing something that is rare in 2025, a win by a backup QB.
Argos safety Derek Slywka recorded the 4th longest fumble return touchdown in #CFL history at 105 yards on Sunday vs. Ottawa.

Then, he returned a missed field goal 120 yards for his second TD of the game.

2025 CFL Week 4 preview
Bo Levi Mitchell became the quickest CFL quarterback in history to 100 wins in 143 games (142 starts). Ron Lancaster accomplished the feat in 149 starts with Ottawa (Rough Riders) and Saskatchewan.
Montréal became mortal with Davis Alexander out and McLeod Bethel-Thompson in his place. Bethel-Thompson didn't need more points last week when he came into the game in Edmonton. The Alouettes did need points in Hamilton. Tyson Philpot barely got on screen. Hamilton had an offence major and a defence major well before Montréal finally got to the end zone.
Mitchell went 25-for-31 for 247 yards and 2 touchdowns. The list of quarterbacks with 100 starts, including Mitchell and Lancaster, are Tracy Ham, Matt Dunigan, Anthony Calvillo, Danny McManus, Henry Burris, Damon Allen, Ricky Ray, and Kevin Glenn.

2025 CFL Week 2 preview
Edmonton is getting better. The Elks had a 10-6 lead. The team even tied the Blue Bombers at 23-23 through 3 quarters.
Winnipeg scored 13 points in the 4th quarter. Edmonton had 2 1st downs in the quarter, both under a minute remaining.
The last time the Elks defeated the Blue Bombers in the regular season: November 3, 2018.
Thought bubble: Tyrell Ford was back in Winnipeg, this time with the Elks. Ford left Winnipeg to be with his twin brother, quarterback Tre Ford, in northern Alberta. Good for him, though Winnipeg is undefeated and Edmonton is the last team to not win a CFL game so far in 2025.
2025 CFL Week 1 preview: Opening weekend
They managed to build a music-only, summertime-only stadium (Rogers Stadium) off the Downsview Park TTC stop in Toronto. Yet we can't get a new CFL stadium in Calgary or a CFL stadium of any kind in Halifax.
TTC and GO Transit rides from Rogers Stadium will be free for concertgoers. Would a similar deal help get more Argonauts fans to BMO Field?

On Thursday, July 3, as an unofficial kickoff to the Calgary Stampede (July 4-13), the hometown team will welcome the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for the first-ever Stampede Bowl.
2025 CFL preview
Observant people on social media noticed that Montréal was the only CFL team to not wear Canadian flags on their uniforms. Because of Quebec's history with things Canadian, there was an assumption that there was a correlation.
I did not notice but, as human as I can be, I might have made those same assumptions.
The official explanation is more docile than that. Indeed the Alouettes will have the Canadian flags this week.

Trevor Harris, who has been in Canada for some time, and A.J. Ouellette, who has spent less time in Canada, had fun with Canadian trivia. I knew all the answers except for the coloured pencils. Test your knowledge against these Roughriders.

Journalists are naturally curious yet also respectful if something is happening that isn't any of our business. We wondered what happened to John Lu, the Winnipeg bureau person for TSN. Lu had more of a presence on Winnipeg Jets games on TSN3 but Sara Orlesky (former TSN person who works for the Jets) took over the telecasts.
Turns out Lu is retiring from covering sports, leaving TSN after 25 years. Well-deserved retirement.
“We will miss his insight, his fashion, and we’ll just miss a really good guy in John Lu. We wish John Lu the best in his retirement,” James Duthie said during TSN's hockey coverage on Tuesday.
Lu was covering the Jets for TSN as a reporter, but we hadn't seen him on the field for the 2 Winnipeg Blue Bombers home games. His last tweet on May 21 was Jets-related.
Brit Dort is solid and does a good job. Dort has to drift to cover her own beat in Regina, Calgary (without a regular person there) and last week in Winnipeg. We've heard that Glenn Schiller will take over covering the Jets but we don't know how that will translate to the Blue Bombers sideline duties.
We are excited to welcome the @CFLonTSN panel live at our game on Sunday night!!

Wynton McManis is injured and plays for Toronto, so McManis was ideal to jump on the CFL on TSN panel.
Brit Dort and Claire Hanna each worked 2 games on the sidelines.
